Ph.D. opportunity in experimental petrology and igneous rock textures

Greetings,

I am looking for a Ph.D. student to work on a recently funded 3-year project on how thermal cycling affects crystal growth. The main issues involve the role of thermal cycling on crystal cannibalism and growth of phenocrysts in both volcanic and plutonic rocks, and will utilize a 1-atmosphere gas mixing furnace and cold-seal pressure vessels. Tying such work to specific field examples will be an important part of this project. Relevant analytical equipment at UNC and nearby institutions includes furnaces, a field-emission SEM, a JEOL JXA 8530F field-emission microprobe, and an Element2 high-resolution laser-ablation ICPMS.

The successful candidate will have a solid background in geology, enthusiasm for petrology and geochemistry, and strong quantitative skills. Benefits of undertaking graduate work at UNC include the Martin Fund, which supports summer salary, research expenses, and travel to meetings for graduate students.

Interested students should contact me. For more information about the Department of Geological Sciences at UNC, see http://www.geosci.unc.edu/; application procedures are at http://www.geosci.unc.edu/page/application-procedures.
Application by January 15 is encouraged.

Allen
