Graduate students and postdocs: FEMA sponsored short course after AGU:

Have you wondered what to do in case of a volcanic crisis?  The National Disaster Preparedness Training Center at University of Hawaii is scheduling a free FEMA-sponsored day-and-a-half course on Volcanic Crises Awareness.  The course runs from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday December 8 and 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Sunday December 9.  The course will be held at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel and FEMA covers all administrative costs.  On completion of the course and a pre and post-test, you will receive a certificate from FEMA.

Volcanic Crisis Awareness was developed this year, jointly by the University of Hawaii and the Volcanic Hazards program of USGS.  The course includes 5 modules entitled:

The volcano problem

Hazards and impacts

The pulse of the volcano

Case studies

Awareness and preparedness

These are then followed by a 4-hour long eruption scenario based on a future eruption at Mount Hood.

Registration for the course and the pre-test are available online.  Please contact Kristine Kosinski (kkosinsk@xxxxxxxxxx) for information on the registration process.  Further information is available at https://ndptc.hawaii.edu/training/course_delivery/185.
