Graduate students and postdocs: FEMA sponsored volcanic hazards short course at GSA:
There are still places available on the GSA short course 505 Volcanic Crisis Awareness, which runs from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday November 2 and 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday November 3. This free short course runs immediately before the GSA annual meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was developed this year, jointly by the University of Hawaii and the Volcanic Hazards program of USGS.
The course includes 5 modules entitled:
The volcano problem
Hazards and impacts
The pulse of the volcano
Case studies
Awareness and preparedness
These are then followed by a 4-hour long eruption scenario based on a future eruption at Mount Hood.
FEMA covers all administrative costs for this course and issues a formal certificate to participants who complete the course.
