Dear all,

We would like to draw your attention to the following The past is the key to the future session at the upcoming Cities on Volcanoes 7 conference, in Colima, Mexico from 19-23 November 2012.

Early-bird registration has been extended until 12 August, and the abstract submission deadline is now 28 August – please see http://www.citiesonvolcanoes7.com for further details.

Session 1.2: The past is the key to future. What can we learn from volcanic deposits?

Detailed stratigraphic studies supported by precise geochronology are the key to understand the past eruptive behaviour of volcanoes. These studies include determining changes in eruptive style, eruption rate, compositional variation, breaks in activity, distribution, and volume of the eruptive products for example. Studies of lithological and textural features of products and interpretation of their origin are also important. A careful determination of the eruptive and physical parameters is useful to estimate the magnitude, intensity and frequency of the different volcanic events. From this general prediction of future eruptive behaviour and possible scenarios for hazard assessment purposes can be considered. This session will discuss both traditional and innovative methodologies used in the study of volcanic deposits, as well as examples from different varied volcanoes.

Conveners:
Gerardo Carrasco, Centro de Geociencias, UNAM Campus Juriquilla
Paul Cole, Monserrat Volcano Observatory, West Indies
Abel Cortés, Colima Volcano Observatory, Colima, Mexico

We welcome you to submit abstracts to the session. Please note that the word limit is 300 words without references, tables or figures, and that each participant may submit up to two abstracts with a maximum of one to be presented as an oral presentation.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Best regards,
