NPP Satellite Data Users Workshop - input from volcano scientists solicited

Dear all,

Announcing an opportunity to influence the future of satellite-based volcanic emissions monitoring. The recently launched NASA/NOAA Suomi-NPP polar-orbiting satellite has at least 2 instruments useful for volcanic emissions monitoring: the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) - a UV spectrometer capable of measuring SO2, ozone and ash during daytime, and the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) - an IR instrument similar to AIRS and IASI for the detection of explosive eruption clouds (SO2 and ash, day and night). Currently, volcanic SO2 and ash data are not operational requirements for these instruments.

NASA is organizing a NPP Data Users workshop, June 21-22, 2012 In Washington, DC, USA to provide the user community with an opportunity to communicate their data product requirements. The aim of this meeting is to define the applied data products to be made available from the series of future NASA-NOAA polar-orbiting meteorological satellites.

If you or your organization makes use of space-based volcanic degassing and eruption data, this is the venue to express your need for continuation of US volcanic data products. If you support the provision of volcanic data products from the US NPP-JPSS1-JPSS2 satellites and will be in Washington, DC at the time of the workshop, or know somebody in the vicinity who can speak for your organization, please, encourage them to register (registration is free) using the following link:

If you cannot attend the workshop, but would like to support future satellite-based volcanic products, you may e-mail letters expressing your needs to Nickolay Krotkov.
