3-year Marie Curie Research Fellowship/PhD at the Earth and Environmental Science Section of the University of Geneva

We seek a highly-motivated PhD candidate in the frame of the FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network NEMOH: Numerical, Experimental and Stochastic Modelling of Volcanic Processes and Hazard: an Initial Training Network for the next generation of European Volcanologists (
http://www.nemoh-itn.eu/), to start on 1st November 2012. The project will focus on numerical and experimental investigations of particle transport and sedimentation in a multi-hazard setting (tephra fall and granular flows). The successful candidate will learn how to design and carry out dedicated experiments and will become familiar with state-of-the-art numerical approaches for the study and description of particle transport and sedimentation. A special look will be given to the quantification and parameterization of uncertainties for the development of optimized multi-hazard assessment strategies in collaboration with Dr Marzocchi and Dr Sandri (INGV, Italy).

The successful candidate will work for three years at the Unit of Geological Risk of the Earth and Environmental Science Section of the University of Geneva (
http://www.unige.ch/sciences/terre/mineral/volcano/index_en.html). The Earth and Environmental Science Section of the University of Geneva is a dynamic and stimulating working environment with a long history and expertise in the field of risk reduction and prevention and  is equipped with dedicated facilities for the assessment of volcanic hazards (sedimentology lab; petrology lab; computer facilities; fluid dynamics lab for the study of hazardous flows). The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other members of NEMOH consortium, travel and present their work at international conferences, NEMOH consortium meetings and workshops. Part of the research (from 2 to 7 months) will be performed at another of the 13 Institutions from 8 countries that form the NEMOH consortium (see the NEMOH website for further information). A likely secondment is to INGV Rome to develop comprehensive probabilistic strategies of hazard assessment.

Candidates must meet the following requisites: 1) any nationality, but not having resided or carried out their main activity (job, studies, …) in Switzerland for more than 1 year in the past 3 years; 2) within 4 years from the degree that in their country gives access to a PhD; 3) not having completed a PhD. Current PhD students can apply; 4) be qualified in the physical sciences with good numerical and practical skills.

Potential candidates should send a motivation letter, a CV and two letters of recommendation to Costanza Bonadonna (
Costanza.Bonadonna@xxxxxxxx) before 15 June 2012.
