We wish to draw your attention to the Fall AGU Session V16:Chemical, Physical and Petrographic Perspectives on Magmatic Differentiation as outlined below. Information about submitting an abstract to this session can be found on the AGU Fall 2010 website. Please also email any of the conveners if you are interested in learning more about the session.
Advances in microanalytical techniques have made it possible to study the composition and history of igneous rocks in intricate detail. Geochemical analysis of not just individual phases and inclusions but also of geochemical zonation within inclusions, glasses and minerals is now commonplace and provides important constraints on the origin and evolution of many igneous rocks. However, it is also of critical importance to place these fine scale measurements in a clear petrological, textural and physical framework. This session aims to bring together workers interested in the processes of differentiation of igneous rocks and in particular to integrate approaches based on detailed studies of geochemical microanalysis and rock microstructure with those based on observations from petrologic studies and from physical and theoretical modeling. We are especially interested in submissions that combine microanalysis with other approaches to examine the sequence and timing of physical and chemical processes during igneous differentiation, and use this to relate events such as magma crystallization, mixing, assimilation, and degassing to the behaviour of volcanic systems.
Conveners: Adam Kent (adam.kent@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx), Sarah Collins (s.j.collins@xxxxxxxxxxxx), Claire McLeod (c.l.mcleod@xxxxxxxxx) and George Bergantz (bergantz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)
Many Thanks
