************************************************************************************************************************ AGU 2010 Session: V22 Lakes in Volcanic Environments: Geochemical, Limnological, Biological and Geophysical Aspects From: Dmitri Rouwet dmitrirouwet@xxxxxxxxx ************************************************************************************************************************ Dear Volcanic Lake Researchers, After CVL7 in Costa Rica, the Commission of Volcanic Lakes takes a new initiative to promote the multi-disciplinary approach in volcanic lake research. During the AGU 2010 Fall Meeting (13-17 December, San Francisco, http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm10/), the conveners Dmitri Rouwet, Franco Tassi, Shaul Hurwitz and Lisa Morgan propose the Special Session: V22: Lakes in Volcanic Environments: Geochemical, Limnological, Biological and Geophysical Aspects The AGU abstract submission site is scheduled to open on 21 July. The deadline is 2 September. ABSTRACT Volcanic lakes can be viewed as windows into the deeper parts of active magmatic-hydrothermal systems. Variations in the volcanic activity are preserved in the chemical and physical state of the lakes, providing valuable information for volcano surveillance and monitoring. Crater lakes at actively degassing volcanoes are among the most acidic and saline features on the Earth’s surface, while the deep neutral pH lakes may host huge CO2-CH4 reservoirs able to trigger gas bursts. The present session will focus on these extreme environments employing geochemistry, geophysics, limnology, modelling, and biology to better understand a variety of volcanic processes and potential geologic hazards.
