Workshop on large-scale experimentation on volcanic processes, 17-19 September 2010

A workshop is planned in Buffalo, New York, aimed at developing research priorities and initial design concepts for an international user facility for large-scale experimentation on volcanic processes, with the aim of broadening to other geological hazard processes in the future. Examples of processes that might be studied with this facility include (but are not limited to):
Pyroclastic density current dynamics and deposition on scales of ~100-200 m
Debris avalanche processes
Crater and diatreme development
Magma-water interaction
Large-scale dirty plumes
Testing new remote sensing technologies for measuring eruption processes
Workshop deliverables will include a report to the National Science Foundation and the University at Buffalo (which are providing support for the workshop) and to be submitted to Eos, and the development of a strategy to build international support for the facility.
Up to ten postdoctoral researchers and graduate students will be selected to participate in the workshop with funding to support their travel expenses. Postdocs and students who are interested in participating should submit an application that includes a 2-page CV (with publications) and short (1-2 paragraph) explanation of your research interests and how large-scale experiments would support your long term goals.
Applications should be submitted to all four members of the Organizing Committee, listed at the top of this announcement. Acceptance will be based upon the research record and potential of the candidate (demostrated by the CV) and the alignment of the workshop with the applicant's long-term research goals. Deadline for application is 23 July 2010, and decisions will be made within two weeks after that date.
Additional space will be available for a limited number of researchers who will travel under their own funds. Interested researchers should
contact the Organizing Committee directly by email with a short (1-2 paragraph) explanation of research background and the role that large-scale experiments. Acceptance criteria will be similar to that for students and postdocs and the number of researchers accepted will depend on the capacity of the facilities for the workshop.
