Acoustic Surveillance for Hazardous Eruptions (ASHE) -Tungurahua, Ecuador

Aloha,

Now that the Acoustic Surveillance for Hazardous Eruptions (ASHE) system evaluation period is over, papers are published, and Ph.D.s completed, we'll be putting the automatic ASHE-Tungurahua web page on the air. In the interim, inquiring minds can check out the ongoing volcanosonic activity at:

http://www.isla.hawaii.edu/ecuador/
user: ecuador; password: tremor

These are not operational products, but do provides a continuous baseline of acoustic activity at Tungurahua since 2006, observed at a range of 40 km from the vent (as the crow flies).

This latest eruption sequence has been hovering between our nominal medium and high acoustic levels over the last few days. And indeed there are some big explosions in there.

For the really inquisitive, the following papers describe the web page products and ASHE project objectives:

1. Fee, D., Garces, M.A., and Steffke, A., Infrasound from Tungurahua Volcano 2006-2008: Strombolian to Plinian eruptive activity, /Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research /(2010), doi:10.1016/j.jvolgeores.2010.03.006.

2. Steffke, A., Fee, D., Garces, M.A. Harris, A., Identifying eruption chronologies, plume heights and eruption styles at Tungurahua volcano: Integrating thermal infrared satellite
and infrasound data, /Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research (2010), /doi:10.1016/j.jvolgeores.2010.03.004.

3. Matoza, R. S., D. Fee, M. A. Garces, J. M. Seiner, P. A. Ramon, and M. A. H. Hedlin (2009), Infrasonic jet noise from volcanic eruptions, /Geophys. Res. Lett/., 36, L08303, 10.1029/2008GL036486.

4. Garcés, M., D. Fee, A. Steffke, D. McCormack, R. Servranckx, H. Bass, C. Hetzer, M. Hedlin, R. Matoza, H. Yepes, and P. Ramon (2008), Capturing the acoustic fingerprint of stratospheric ash injection, /Eos Trans. AGU/, 89, doi:10.1029/2008EO400001.

Of course, the best and most reliable source for all pre-eruptive and eruptive activity in Ecuador is the Instituto Geofisico in Quito.

Aloha, Milton
