3 year - PhD position: "Petrogenesis of basanite-phonolite series of
an oceanic intraplate volcano: combining experimental data and field
observations"
A 3-year PhD position in experimental petrology is open at the
Institute of Mineralogy, Leibniz University of Hannover, starting in
September-October 2010. The project is aimed to better understand the
magma evolution and differentiation processes of basanite-phonolite
volcanic series, based on experimental work using natural samples from
La Palma, Canary Islands. The major goal of the study is to constrain
the range of thermodynamic conditions (pressure, temperature, oxygen
fugacity) for the petrogenesis of phonolithic melts. The project
involves experimental work with high-pressure high-temperature
apparatus (IHPV, CSPV), and microscopic and analytical work (e.g.
microprobe, infrared spectroscopy, Laser ablation ICP-MS) with natural
and experimental samples.
Applicants should have an education in Geosciences (diploma, master or
equivalent certificate) with strong background in petrology and
geochemistry. An experience with experimental equipment is desirable.
An interest in technical optimization of experimental equipment and
participation in development of experimental and analytical procedures
is expected. Very good language skills in English are required for
Non-German applicants.
The research is collaborative project between the Experimental
Laboratory of Institute of Mineralogy, University of Hannover and
Geochemistry Laboratory of Institute of Geosciences, Bremen
University. The student will be based in Hannover, but will be
supervised jointly by R.Almeev (Hannover) and A.Klugel (Bremen). The
position is funded by German Science Foundation (DFG) for three years.
Payment is 75% E13 of the collective labour agreement of the German
States (TvL). The review process will proceed until the position is
filled.
As an equal opportunity employer, the Leibniz Universitat Hannover
strongly encourages women to apply. Equally qualified disabled
applicants will be given preference. To ensure consideration, submit
application by August 30, 2010. Applications including the common
documents (CV, certificates, possible reference persons, list of
publications if available) should be sent either by mail or
electronically to both:
Dr. Renat Almeev (r.almeev@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx).
