PhD in Volcanic/magmatic processes at Santorini, Greece

Applications are invited for a PhD project at the Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans, Clermont-Ferrand (France), starting in October 2010.  This project will study the history of magma ascent, recharge and eruption of silicic magma during the development of Santorini Volcano in Greece. Santorini is chosen because of its record of explosive volcanism extending back 350,000 years, and the existence of detailed, previously published studies of its eruptive history. The project will include detailed fieldwork to establish a firm stratigraphic framework for sampling, basic petrological and geochemical rock characterization, study of phenocryst zoning patterns by  backscattered electron imagery, microanalysis of phenocryst phases and glass inclusions (major, trace, volatiles), and constraints of timescales of magma crystallization and mixing using inversion of trace element profiles in phenocrysts. The research is one component of a larger project collaborative between the laboratories of Clermont-Ferrand, Orléans, CRPG Nancy, CEA Saclay and EOS Singapore. Equipment available includes SEM, EPMA, SIMS, µ-Raman and whole rock major and trace element analysis by ICP.  The student will be based in Clermont-Ferrand, but will be supervised jointly by T. Druitt (Clermont), B. Scaillet (Orléans), E. Deloule (Nancy) and F. Costa (Singapore), and will spend short periods in Nancy, Orléans and Singapore to carry out analyses and collaborate with the supervisors.  The project is funded for three years by the Auvergne regional council. Potential candidates are requested to send a full CV, copies of exam results, the names of three referees, and a letter of motivation to T.H. Druitt (T.Druitt@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) by the 10 June.
