We would like to invite you to the following field trip held post-conference to Cities on Volcanoes 6, Tenerife

Title: Explosive Volcanism at Tenerife, Canary Islands (Field trip CoV #A17)

Leaders: Ray Cas (email: ray.cas@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) and Adrian Pittari (apittari@xxxxxxxxxxxxx)

Date: June 5-7. Field trip departs from Puerto de la Cruz early on 5th June and returns to Puerto de la Cruz late on 7th June. Two night's accommodation (5th and 6th June) will be at Parador Nacional de las Cañadas del Teide.

Cost: 300EUR. (Includes full pension)

Tenerife is the second largest oceanic island shield volcano on Earth, after Hawaii. The oldest shield lavas are 12 Ma, and basaltic volcanism occurs to the present day from flank rift zones. About 4 Ma an evolved phonolitic magma system developed in the centre of the island and eventually produced the summit Las Cañadas caldera complex, as well as the currently active Teide stratovolcano. This fieldtrip will examine aspects of explosive and effusive volcanism associated with shield-forming activity as well as the very variable explosive phonolitic volcanism, presented by spectacular exposures in the caldera wall and along the lower slopes of the island in the Bandes del Sur.

Major topics include: basaltic volcanism of the Dorsal Ridge; nested caldera formation of the Las Cañadas caldera complex; Teide Stratovolcano growth; pyroclastic fall, flow and surge deposits of the Guajara and Diego Hernández caldera cycles; dispersal processes and hazards of the Las Cañadas system; landslides of Tenerife.

Registration closes April 15. Please register through the conference website www.citiesonvolcanoes6.com under 'Activities and Field Trips'.

Kind regards
Ray Cas
Adrian Pittari
