Birth of a Mountain - Montserrat's Volcano, an Eyewitness Account
by Lally Brown, Sargeant Press, 2010

Lally Brown gives a resident's first-hand eyewitness account of living through the first three years of the eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano on Montserrat, and then continues the story with occasional subsequent visits to the island, right up to the end of 2009.  The book is an accurate record of the way the volcanic activity evolved, as seen by an interested and objective member of the public, and the way the crisis developed for the people of this small island and how they perceived the effects - and the politics - on their lives.  The book represents an invaluable contribution that helps fill the void of information of this kind on this eruption, outside the scientific literature.  It is nicely produced, 278 pages long, with several evocative b&w photos.

Lally Brown (aka Liz Sargeant) has had 90 copies of the book printed. She is happy to let any interested reader in the UK have a copy for (GB pounds) £7 inc. postage, or £12  inc. postage for overseas purchasers, with cheques payable to "Elizabeth Sargeant". Anyone interested in acquiring a copy should email her at:
