It is a pleasure for the conveners of the session
T09. Subduction Zones: From the Trench to the Arc
of the upcoming AGU 2010 Meeting of Americas,
to be held in Iguazu Falls, 8–13 August 2010, to invite
you to submit abstracts to this session.


Subduction Zones: From the Trench to the Arc

Subduction zones are responsible for nearly 90%
of the energy released by earthquakes and for most
of the active and more dangerous volcanoes of the
world. Understanding the entire process from the
trench to the arc at these convergent plate boundaries
helps assessing the potential for future disasters that
will affect people and infrastructure. Subduction zones
in the Americas are representative of almost the entire
spectrum of subduction types, from steep deep
Wadatti-Benioff zones with upper plate extension to
shallow dipping plate interfaces with extreme upper
plate compression. In the last decade there had been
very important findings on how subduction zones work.
Particularly with the experiments carried out through
two interconnected, international and multidisciplinary
initiatives, the Seismogenic Zones Experiment (SEIZE)
and the Subduction Factory (SUBFAC). In this session
we would like to integrate contributions from geophysics,
geology and geochemistry to stimulate further joint
research and discuss future hot topics in convergent
margin research. We invite participants to submit abstracts
on any of, but not limited to,  the following themes: large
and great interplate earthquakes, extend and parameters
that control the seismogenic zone, deep earthquakes and
their relationship with shallow thrust earthquakes, slow and
low frequency earthquakes and tectonic tremor, long term
forearc deformation, earthquake cycle geodetic monitoring,
double seismic zones, role of fluids in the seismogenic zone
and metamorphic reactions, comparative analysis of different
subduction zones, the mantle wedge and its role in arc
magmatism, and volcano monitoring. Multidisciplinary
contributions are strongly encouraged.
