3-year postdoc at UEA: Volcanic mercury: local deposition or global dispersion?

"Volcanic mercury: local deposition or global dispersion?"

£29,704 to £35,469 per annum

Applications are invited for a Senior Research Associate in the School
of Environmental Sciences at UEA. The overriding aim of this project
is to understand whether the substantial fluxes of mercury emitted
continuously to the atmosphere by degassing volcanoes are primarily
deposited locally (hence posing a significant hazard to the local
population, ecosystems and environment) or are transported long
distances away from the volcanic source and thereby contribute to
global background atmospheric Hg levels. This work is done in
collaboration with partners who focus on field measurements of mercury
and other compounds, whereas the UEA part focuses on numerical
modelling using an existing one-dimensional model as well as
WRF-CHEM. In addition to the modelling, this position includes
participation in field work in Nicaragua (using UV spectroscopy and
standard techniques for meteorological data, O3 concentrations and
particle size distributions) and data analysis.

The position is available starting 01 April 2010 for a period of 3 years.

Applicants must have either completed a PhD in atmospheric science or
a related field or have equivalent experience. Experience in
atmospheric modelling (especially with WRF-CHEM or another regional
model) and a good knowledge of atmospheric chemistry are desirable and
the candidate should be willing to participate in two field
campaigns. Similarly experience with UNIX/Linux, FORTRAN or another
high-level language is an advantage.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss the position
informally with Dr Roland von Glasow (R.von-Glasow@xxxxxxxxx).

Closing date: 12 noon on 22 January 2010.

Further particulars and an application form are available on our
website: http://www.uea.ac.uk/hr/jobs/ra/ra626.htm or Tel. 01603 593493.
