Vesuvius and Sustainability

Since 1995 my colleagues and I have been inviting the schools around
Vesuvius to participate in annual gatherings to promote a greater
consciousness of the volcano. Thousands of students from elementary,
middle, and high schools have participated with their works and today
many of their presentations rival those of professionals. In the past,
we had different experts discussing volcanoes and volcanic risk in the
Vesuvius area, educational material, and simply talking to the students
and their teachers and encouraging them to become informed and
responsible citizens. Some students from these schools will become
territorial leaders and our hope is that they will work toward the
development of a sustainable territory.

This year’s theme of the meeting is “Vesuvius and Sustainability” and
will take place on 29 and 30 January at the technical institute Eugenio
Pantaleo in Torre del Greco. We encourage open exchange of ideas and
invite presentations on the theme of the meeting. If you wish to
contribute, please provide me with a title and a short description of the
talk by January 22, 2010.
Thank you.
