In the framework of the International Year of Planet Earth in 2008,
the Andean Geotrail was an original outreach project with a simple
goal: leading a nine-month bike adventure in the Andean Cordillera,
from Ushuaia to Lima, to discover the Earth through the experience of
two geologists. Lead by two young geologists Caroline Sassier and
Olivier Galland, the adventure and geological investigations have been
shared with about 600 school pupils and students in France and in
Norway.

The Andean Geotrail team has returned from South America last
September and will be present at AGU Fall meeting 2009 to share their
extraordinary experience and present the pedagogical results of this
atypical popular geoscientific project. From wild regions to erupting
volcanoes, from giant ore deposits to breathtaking geological
sceneries, and from extraordinary stories with the local people to the
bike theft and the end of the adventure by foot, they shared their
geological knowledge with the pupils and the public through their blog
during the adventure. Notably so, they aimed to show (1) how the
natural resources form, (2) the origins of the volcanological and
seismic hazards and their impact on the populations, and (3) the
origins of the Andean sceneries and glaciers.

The Andean Geotrail will be presented as posters in Education sessions
on Monday 14^th and Tuesday 15^th .
