**************************************************************************************************** New igneous petrology text From: Robin Gill <robingill@xxxxxxx> **************************************************************************************************** May I draw your attention to a new igneous petrology text being published by Wiley-Blackwell in the New Year: _______________________________________________________________________ IGNEOUS ROCKS AND PROCESSES A PRACTICAL GUIDE. Robin Gill. January 2010. Wiley-Blackwell. ISBN (paperback) 978-0-632-06377-2 Also available in hardback. ______________________________________________________________________ The book is aimed at geoscience students taking introductory or intermediate-level courses in igneous petrology. It serves uniquely as both a conventional course text and as a practical laboratory manual. It helps the student to develop key skills and self-confidence in identifying igneous minerals as well as interpreting - and allocating appropriate names to - unknown igneous rocks presented to them. Following an introduction reviewing igneous nomenclature, each main chapter addresses a specific compositional category of magmatic rocks, covering definition, mineralogy, eruption/emplacement processes, textures and crystallization processes, geotectonic distribution, geochemistry, and aspects of magma genesis. One chapter is devoted to phase equilibrium experiments and magma evolution; another introduces pyroclastic volcanology. Each chapter concludes with exercises, answers being provided at the end of the book. As well as a comprehensive glossary of terms, there are appendices summarizing techniques and optical data for microscope mineral identification, various petrographic calculations, and symbols and units used in the book. The book is richly illustrated with line drawings, monochrome pictures and colour plates. Illustrated boxes are used extensively to explain concepts in more depth. A pre-publication inspection copy will be available on the Wiley stand at the Fall AGU For further details, please visit: http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0632063777.html http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0632063777.html Robin Gill Royal Holloway, University of London ============================================================== To unsubscribe from the volcano list, send the message: signoff volcano to: listserv@xxxxxxx, or write to: volcano-request@xxxxxxxx To contribute to the volcano list, send your message to: volcano@xxxxxxxx Please do not send attachments. ==============================================================
