*******************************************************************************************************
The 3rd Workshop on Collapse Calderas to be held on Reunion Island from October 3 to October 9, 2010, is getting closer.
Therefore, we would like to (1) remind you the different topics to be discussed during this event, (2) provide you with new information about deadlines, costs and workshop location and (3) inform you about a pre-workshop international course on collapse calderas open to Master and PhD students.
1) The following sessions will be on the program:
- From pit craters to large calderas on basaltic volcanoes: origin of the collapse structure.
- Silicic calderas on stratovolcanoes and supervolcanoes: just a matter of size?
- Planetary calderas.
- Influence of regional inheritance and stress field in caldera development.
- Collapse, eruption dynamics, deposits and geometry of the caldera.
- Modelling caldera unrest, collapse and post collapse.
- Geophysical and geochemical monitoring of calderas.
- Patterns of post caldera magmatic and volcanic activity.
- Assessment and mitigation of risk associated to calderas.
Field excursions will be organised to the active Piton de la Fournaise (last eruptive sequence September 2008 - January 2009) and the nearby extinct Piton des Neiges volcano.
2) Abstract submission deadline is June 15, 2010. Guideline for abstract submission can be downloaded on http://geosciencesreunion.fr . Registration deadline is February 28, 2010. The expected participation fee is of 650 €. Participation fee for PhD and Master students is of 400 €. Further information about payment will be available on the website by November 1, 2010. Maximum number of participants has been limited to 100. The workshop will be hosted in the Domaines des Pierres at Saint Pierre (www.domainedespierres.com).
3) The pre-workshop international course on collapse calderas is open to Master and PhD students and will take place at the Maison du Volcan (Bourg Murat) between September 30 and October 2. The course introduces to the state-of-art of research and monitoring techniques on collapse calderas and will be held by scientists from several research institutes. The course includes a visit to the Piton de la Fournaise Volcanic Observatory (OVPF) and its monitoring network (one day field trip) and two days of lectures. The participation fee of 150 € includes the hotel (Auberge du Volcan). Registration deadline is February 28, 2010. Places are limited to 40 participants.
We are looking forward to welcome you on Reunion Island for the course and the workshop.
