The GFZ Potsdam Volcanology Group in the Department 2 "Physics of the Earth" invites applications for a 3-year PhD position to work on volcano deformation processes:
“Combined InSAR ground displacement and infrared field changes at deforming volcanoes”
Based on data derived from ground based InSAR and complimentary methods, the time dependent deformation behavior and its effect on the infrared emissivity shall be analyzed and physical models of deformation sources and fluid propagation be developed. At selected active caldera volcanoes, a goal of the project is to better understand whether near surface faults are reactivated and act as pathways, which will be investigated through spatially and temporally high resolution time series.
Qualification: Students with solid quantitative skills (numerical methods, statistics), programming knowledge, and interest in geodetic signal processing are encouraged to apply. Experience in instrumentation and geophysical data processing is helpful, as is a background crustal deformation processes, and the ability to conduct field work in volcanic areas. Applicants must hold a master degree, or an equivalent level of education, in geodesy, geophysics, physics or a related discipline.
