*The Piton de la Fournaise volcano observatory welcomes a new director and
strengthens its scientific team.*

Starting in September 2009, Andrea Di Muro has become the new Director of
the Piton de la Fournaise Volcano Observatory (OVPF-IPGP) for the next 4
years. Andrea Di Muro is a volcanologist specialized in vibrational
spectroscopic techniques (Raman, FTIR), which give key information on
volcanic gases. He succeeds Valerie Ferrazzini, Director since January 2009
and Thomas Staudacher, Director from 1995 to 2008. Staudacher and Ferrazzini
will pursue their research and monitoring activities at the Observatory.

Vincent Courtillot, Head of IPGP, praised "their monitoring work performed
flawlessly during a period of intense activity of Piton de la Fournaise
volcano". He and Stephen Tait, Director of the French volcano observatories
at IPGP, reaffirmed the will to "build a team that has the critical mass
both to promote a dynamic research program and guarantee the very
time-consuming tasks of continuous monitoring of the volcano". Stephen Tait
affirms that, "OVPF, with nearly 30 eruptions since 1998 and 30 years of
continuous observation data archives, has become a laboratory of worldwide
importance."

A second young researcher, Florent Brenguier, Research Fellow, Seismologist
at the IPGP will strengthen the OVPF scientific team for the next 3 years as
coordinator of the research project "UnderVolc", funded by the National
Research Agency (ANR). The Observatory will also benefit during 3 months
from the contribution of Genevieve Roult, the former Director of the global
seismic network "Géoscope", who is studying seismic precursors of volcanic
eruptions at Piton de la Fournaise. Finally, Guillaume Levieux, Outreach
Officer of the French volcano observatories, is on a 4-month mission at OVPF
to develop public awareness and education programmes, in collaboration with
local partners.
