Putting Research into Practice

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

We would like to draw your attention to the upcoming conference “Disaster
Risk Reduction for Natural Hazards: Putting Research into Practice”, to be
held at University College London on November 4th – 6th, 2009.  The meeting
will bring together researchers and practitioners from academia, civil
authorities and the humanitarian, development and business sectors.  The aim
of the meeting is to examine the concept and process of disaster risk
reduction, with particular emphasis on multi-hazard environments and
multi-disciplinary approaches within natural hazards. A key objective of the
conference is to define ways in which disaster risk reduction may become
more effective in the future.

Registration is now open.  Forms can be downloaded from the website

Price includes conference fee, lunch on day two and three, refreshments and
a wine reception on the evening of day one.

Early-Bird (before August 28th, 2009):  Professional £100, Student £50
After August 28th, 2009:  Professional £130, Student £80

Conference dinner is scheduled for the evening of Thursday November 5th,
price £40 per person.  We plan to visit Imperial China restaurant in Soho

Confirmed keynote speakers and session chairs include: J-C Gaillard
(University of Grenoble), Julia Becker (Joint Centre for Disaster Research
and GNS Science, New Zealand), Jessica Mercer (CAFOD), Tom Mitchell
(Institute of Development Studies) and John Twigg (Aon Benfield UCL Hazard
Research Centre).  Planned sessions include:

Session 1: What is DRR and how does it work in practice? (invited session)
Session 2: Quantifying hazardous natural processes
Session 3: Assessing vulnerability, resilience and capacity
Session 4: Cultural perceptions of hazard and risk
Session 5: Effective communication and decision making
