********************************************************** From: Michael Sheridan <mfs@xxxxxxxxxxx> ********************************************************** Call for student applicants to participate in a Workshop on Volcanic Hazards to be held at Galeras Volcano, Colombia, 6-11 July 2009. We anticipate NSF funding for a limited number (approximately 8) of students based at a USA institution of higher learning to participate in a workshop entitled "Knowledge Sharing and Collaboration in Volcanic Risk Mitigation at Galeras Volcano, Colombia" http://geohazards.buffalo.edu/conference/agenda/. Applications from minority and under represented groups are strongly encouraged. A basic understanding of Spanish would be useful, but is not required. Participating students will present a poster related to geologic hazards at the workshop. Student candidates should see that the following materials are sent electronically to Michael Sheridan mfs@xxxxxxxxxxx: 1) a brief (1-2 page) CV, 2) an abstract for a poster that they would present at the workshop, 3) a one page explanation of how they would benefit from participating in the workshop and 4) request their advisor to send a letter supporting their application to the workshop. Review of applications will commence on June 1 and continue until all positions are filled. Galeras has been very active during the past 500 years. Approximately 10,000 people live within the designated high-hazard zone and another 400,000 people within the area of potential harmful effects. The volcano currently is in a very active stage and a future large eruption in a medium time frame is possible. Risk mitigation involves a range of stakeholders including local to national government, observatory personnel, farmers, indigenous communities, and urban dwellers. This workshop is designed to improve the communication and risk perception among all of the parties involved (see http://galerasworkshop09.weebly.com/index.html). The workshop focuses on the use of models to create an integrated, statistically-based hazards assessment. The general objective of this workshop is to analyze the existing hazard maps and safety plans for Galeras and form a bridge connecting scientists, decision makers, and other stake holders to promote a better understanding of the hazards presented by Galeras. The desired outcome is improved measures for protection of people and property in the potentially threatened areas. Specific workshop objectives include: * Discuss existing hazard mapping and mitigation procedures at various volcanoes. * Present the physical basis of phenomena of explosive volcanism (ash fall and flow). * Use modeling methods to create an integrated, statistically-based hazards assessment as a coherent approach to the generation of hazard maps. * Understand the specific hazards and vulnerabilities presented by Galeras * Communicate the views of all stakeholder groups with respect to the volcanic hazard. * Develop a logic tree for hazard and risk assessment based on key questions provided by the workshop participants.
