Apologies for any cross-postings:
---------------------------------

Nordic Volcanological Center, Institute of Earth Sciences, University
of Iceland.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher to work within
the crustal deformation group at Nordvulk/IES at the University of
Iceland for 2 years.
The candidate is expected to participate in one or more of the ongoing
projects, which include:
- studies of an ongoing earthquake sequence in the South Iceland
Seismic Zone (two pairs of M6-6.5 events in 2000 and 2008)
- measurements and modeling of glacial isostatic adjustments due to
the rapid melting of glaciers in Iceland
- interplay between volcanic unrest and seismic activity, possible
triggering mechanisms
- extensive expansion of the CGPS network in Iceland, including
stations collecting data at 1Hz
- comparison of temporal and spatial evolution of the state of stress
and presence of fluids in the crust from earthquake data and strain
from geodetic data

Specific tasks include analysis and interpretation of existing
deformation (GPS and InSAR), as well as fieldwork to collect new data.
The applicant should have a PhD degree in Geophysics or related fields
at the time of appointment (preferably no later than Sept. 1, 2009).
Good computer a skills and experience in GPS data analysis are
essential. Familiarity with InSAR data analysis, numerical modeling,
seismic tomography and/or interest in joint interpretation of geodetic
and seismic data are an added advantage.

The application should include a CV, list of publications, summary of
research interests, research plan and names of three referees, with
contact information.

The research will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Thóra
Árnadóttir (http://www.norvol.hi.is/~thora/) and Dr. Freysteinn
Sigmundsson (http://www.raunvis.hi.is/~fs/) at the University of
Iceland. Visits to collaborators outside Iceland, e.g. the University
of Arizona (Dr. Sigrún Hreinsdóttir) and Uppsala University (Dr. Björn
Lund and Dr. Ari Tryggvason) will be made possible.

The application deadline is June 1, 2009. For further information
contact Thóra Árnadóttir (thora1@xxxxx)
