The Hazard and Disaster Management programmes (BSc (Hons), PG Dip. Sc., MSc and PhD) at University of Canterbury, New Zealand introduce graduates in the earth sciences to the realities of managing natural hazards in society, with the goal of improving the use of geosciences in hazard and disaster management decision-making. This position therefore requires a well-qualified research scientist who is committed to advancing and applying science for the benefit of society, and to communicating it to non-scientists at all levels. Applicants for this position will be expected to develop course material and contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise postgraduate research students in the Hazard and Disaster Management programme, and initiate their own research programmes. An excellent research and publication track record in relevant aspects of the earth sciences and their application to hazard mitigation is a key requirement. Evidence of a commitment to excellent teaching and research, with demonstrated ability to obtain external funding, will be required.
