****************************************************** From: Carlos Navarro <naoc@xxxxxxx> ****************************************************** Hi all, This is a report of drift pumice near Socorro Island (693 km W from Manzanillo, Mexico). During field work the geologist LT. Martha Marin of Mexican Navy at Socorro Island during 25 January to 3 February noted patches and lines of floating pumice near Socorro Island at Cape Pearce on the East side of the island. The marines reported that the pumice arrived from the North (in this area the California Current is present, and starts the North Equatorial Current). The pumice are rounded with sizes from 2 to 14 cm, the more abundant have 2-5 cm. The pumice are gray to cream (felsic), very glassy and vesicular, poor in crystals, some microphenocrysts (feldspar/quartz?), the pumice show bands of brown color (magma mingling?), without barnacles or other marine organisms, only few and small algae orange to brown in color. This is a call to researchers who are interested to help us to find the source of this intriguing pumice. Now we are in the process of making chemical and petrographic analysis to consider possible sources. Please contact Martha at <evermana@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> or Carlos Navarro at <naoc@xxxxxxx>. Best wishes Carlos Navarro Ochoa Colima Volcano Observatory Colima University, Mexico. ============================================================== To unsubscribe from the volcano list, send the message: signoff volcano to: listserv@xxxxxxx, or write to: volcano-request@xxxxxxxx To contribute to the volcano list, send your message to: volcano@xxxxxxxx Please do not send attachments. ==============================================================
