Position Description Science and Environmental Education Coordinator Full time, Year round position Position Overview: Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, create, manage, evaluate and report on science education programs. The Science Education Coordinator will: -Manage all current science programs and develop new science programs to meet the Institute and Forest Service needs. -Teach classes, make presentations and otherwise share information about Mount St. Helens and other northwest volcanoes to clients and public. -Research and write grants to support current and new programming. -Recruit schools, teachers and students to participate in monument related activities. -Evaluate all science programs annually, including visitor/volunteer evaluations, and create written report for Executive Director and Board of Directors. -Maintain accurate and current financial documentation and report expenses monthly or as required. -Support MSHI staff in development and execution of events and fundraising activities. -Create a Science Educator of the Year Award -Maintain regular and dependable attendance -Attend and participate in staff meetings as required. -Other duties as assigned Specific requirements for the following programs: Seismic Exhibit Work with ED to ensure timely production and installation of seismic exhibit at Johnston Ridge Observatory by May 2010. Work with Seismic team to create new exhibits in subsequent years. Volcano U! Field Seminars Create and manage the Field Seminars program Recruit volunteer instructors Work with ED to promote field seminars Volcano Views and Brews Develop Speaker List Assist on event day with games, introductions, etc. Curriculum Development Create age varied curriculum for use on website, podcasts, videos Create PowerPoint presentations and train interested Volcano Volunteers to deliver specific presentations Write a monthly science column for the newsletter/website Traveling Scholar Program Develop List of volunteer scholars Promote program to schools, service clubs, etc Coordinate scholars and events College Internship Program and Outreach Recruit students and student groups for projects Supervise Interns and complete all required paperwork for credit Website Maintenance Update MSHI-alerts regularly Upload photos and written descriptions of activities and events Required Qualifications: 1. Bachelor's degree in education, environmental education, sciences or related field 2. Minimum 1 year experience working in environmental education 3. Minimum 1 year experience developing and implementing programs 4. Excellent oral and written communication skills 5. Ability to hike up to 15 miles over steep and rugged terrain carrying up to 40 lbs Preferred Qualifications: 1. 3 years experience in progressively more challenging environmental education/program development position 2. 3 years experience working with youth in outdoor educational setting 3. Wilderness First Aid Certification 4. Backpacking, Kayaking, Wilderness Camping and other extreme outdoor skills 5. Local residency 6.
