Poas Volcano: Small phreatic explosion and its relationship to the 6.2
Cinchona earthquake in Costa Rica.

On Monday 12th Poas Volcano produced a shy phreatic explosion,
confined to the center of
the lake. Geol. Jorge Brenes reported and photographed such event
while carrying out fieldwork
along with a team of foreign researchers. Spanish details at:

More intriguing is the fact that such activity occurred after the
fatal Cinchona earthquake felt on Thursday,
January 08, 2009 at 19:21 (GMT) 13:21 local. Twenty people killed and
a dozen others disappeared is
the result of a local faulting event. Epicenter is located some 6 km E
of the volcano probably disturbing
the balance of an already fractured and shallow hydrothermal system.

Several American and Costa Rican volcano researcher led by T. Fischer
were working at the bottom
of the crater when the quake hit. No body was hurt although there were
rockslides falling inside the crater
area.
