Dear Colleagues,
As you are probably aware, the AGU is hosting a Joint-Assembly from 22-25
May, 2007 in Acapulco, Mexico. There are a number of sessions related
to volcanic activity in the Union-wide program. However, we would
like to call special attention to one that we are co-convening, titled
“Recent eruptions and volcanic crises in the Americas/”,
whose description is given below. If you are involved with research
on volcano monitoring, eruption processes, or on responses by scientists
and local authorities to some of these recent eruptions in the Americas
then
we heartily invite you to submit an abstract. Please note that the
hard deadline for abstract submission is 01 MARCH, 2007. Please refer to
the AGU´s site: <http://www.agu.org/> or to one of us for more
information. If you believe that you might
submit an abstract to our session, please give one of us a heads up. We
are searching for candidates who will contribute extraordinary dimensions
to this session. Many thanks!
Warm Regards,
Bob, Gerardo and Patricia (co-conveners)
Section: Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology*
Session Title: RECENT ERUPTIONS AND VOLCANIC CRISES IN THE AMERICAS
Description: Beginning in 1980, a number of destructive eruptions
and volcanic crises have affected the Americas (e.g., Mount St. Helens,
1980; El Chichón, Mexico, 1982; Nevado del Ruiz, Colombia, 1985; Soufrière,
Montserrat, 1994-present; Popocatépetl, 1994-present; Tungurahua, Ecuador,
1998-present). The Mount St. Helens, El Chichón, and Ruiz eruptions
caused the worst volcanic disasters in the histories of United States,
Mexico, and Colombia, respectively. The focus of this session is
to review some of the important volcanological studies spurred by these
eruptions and to emphasize the key lessons learned from the scientific
and governmental responses, successes or failures to these recent and,
for some, still-ongoing volcanic crises. Efforts will be made to
solicit contributions to cover a representative sampling of basic
geologic-dating
studies, volcano-monitoring investigations, volcano-hazards assessments,
and evaluations of effectiveness of hazards information communications
and risk reduction.
