There are two sessions to choose from: Session A meets in Anchorage on June 7 and flies to Katmai National Park for ten days of hiking and discussions in and around the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, returning to Anchorage on June 21. The central theme is the great eruption of June 6-8, 1912, largest of the 20th century. A visit to the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) is included. Session B meets in Anchorage in late July (schedule depends on flight schedules, to be determined shortly) and flies to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia for two weeks of exploration of two active arc volcanoes: Mutnovsky and Gorely. Students will receive 3 hours of undergraduate or graduate credit through UAF. Of equal importance to an exciting introduction to volcanology of the far North Pacific region is sharing ideas, customs, and adventures with students from other countries.
