The last eruption, which started on August 30 eruption at Piton de la
Fournaise is still going on since now 3 ½ months. A second 25 m high
crater "Piton MOINAMA" formed within Dolomieu about 100 m
south-south-west from the first crater "Piton WOUANDZANI". Abundant
lava flows totally covered Dolomieu crater floor by a 10 to 30 m thick layer
and reached the eastern boarder of the Dolomieu crater. Several small
lava flows started from this edge but never reached more than 100 to 200
m length. Due to the ongoing activity inside of Dolomieu it is likely
that beneath the new surface huge lava reservoirs accumulated and over
several weeks risings to the surface of lava could be observed there
covering sometimes surfaces of several hundreds of m2. Since November 27
a new overflow of the Dolomieu crater started and a 4 to 5 m large lava
tube drains presently lava to the Piton de la Fournaise east flank.
There an about 2.5 km long lava flow formed which passed south of crater
Jean, but did not yet reach the "Grandes Pentes".
