Hi Folks,

Considering the large attendance and subsequent degree of participation at last years Accessory Minerals session at the 2006 EGU, especially the excellent poster session, an Accessory Minerals session is once again being planned for the 2007 European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly in Vienna, Austria, April 15 - 20, 2007.

*GMPV18 The Role of Accessory Minerals in Metamorphic and Igneous Processes*

Silicate, phosphate, oxide, and sulphide accessory minerals play an important role in helping to decipher the chemical evolution of rocks over time. They can act both as indicators of chemical states such fugacity or activity as well as allowing for the dating of metasomatic events. In addition they also act as repositories for various element groups such as the (Y+REE) and the actinides. The goal of this session is to bring together geochemists, petrologists, and mineralogists to discuss the most recent advances with regard accessory mineral research as well as relate this research to current general questions in geology such as how subducting slabs evolve and dehydrate as a function of P-T, the chemical and physical nature of the lithospheric mantle beneath the continents, the role of fluids during metamorphism and mineral equilibration, and the role of fluids in mass transfer in both the lower crust and upper mantle.

Invited speakers to this session include Mike Williams, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, who will speak on EMP dating of monazite; Guy Hovis, Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania, who will speak on solution calorimetry of synthetic apatites along the F-Cl join; as well as Mark Harrison, University of California-Los Angeles and Steve Mojzsis, University of Colorado-Boulder who will both speak on various aspects of their research concerning Hadean zircons from the Jack Hills area, Australia. One of the basic themes of this years session will be to explore how accessory minerals (e.g. rutile, titanite, monazite, xenotime, apatite, and zircon) can be used to investigate metasomatic processes in both metamorphic and igneous rocks in the crust and upper mantle. This theme includes (and is not limited to) subducting oceanic plates and subsequent enriched mantle wedges, the role of fluids during high-mid grade metamorphism, and ore deposition. General information on the 2007 EGU Meeting in Vienna can be found at:

*The on-line abstract submission deadline is January 15, 2007.*

Information on the abstract submission process is available at:

http://meetings.copernicus.org/egu2007/how_to_submit_an_abstract.html

East European, Middle Eastern, and African mineralogists, petrologists, and geochemists are especially encouraged to submit abstracts. Should any questions arise as to the suitability of the topic for an abstract to the session, please feel free to contact either of us (email addresses are given below). It would be great if you could join us for what will hopefully prove to be a very diverse and wide ranging session on accessory minerals in historic as well as ever charming Vienna ( http://www.wien.gv.at/english/ ). We hope to see you there. best regards,

Dan Harlov and Fritz Finger
