*************************** 2nd Circular El Chichón Volcano: Twenty five years later San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, México March 20-25, 2007 *************************** The main purpose of this conference is to commemorate the catastrophic 1982 eruption of El Chichón volcano. The conference will reassess our knowledge on the eruption, and review the status of our science, particularly with respect to explosive eruptions, their characteristics, impacts and consequences. The conference is organized and sponsored by UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), UNICACH (Universidad de Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas), and IAVCEI. The conference will consist of invited talks delivered by specialists who worked on the 1982 eruption of El Chichón volcano, and during the last 25 years. We also invite general contributions on other volcanoes and related disciplines, particularly on the topics listed below. 1) Tectonics and regional geology 2) Explosive volcanism 3) Interrelated magmatic and hydromagmatic eruptions 4) Stratigraphy and eruptive mechanisms 5) Sulfur and aerosol emissions 6) Chemistry and petrology of sulfur-rich magmas 7) Volcano seismology 8) Volcano monitoring 9) Volcanic lakes and volcano-hydrothermal systems 10) Social impacts of volcanism 11) Risk assessment 12) Climate effects 13) Volcanoes and archaeology Conference, location and date The meeting will be held in the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas in the State of Chiapas. It will be preceded by a course on modern techniques of volcano monitoring and followed by a fieldtrip to El Chichón volcano: - Training course on volcano monitoring March 16-18th, 2007 - International Conference March 20-22th, 2007 - Fieldtrip to El Chichón March 23-25th, 2007 Abstract submission deadline, January 31, 2007.
