***************************** AGU Town Hall Meeting Science opportunities as part of a proposed National Volcano Early Warning System (NVEWS) From: John W Ewert <jwewert@xxxxxxxx> ***************************** We invite participants of the Fall AGU meeting to join us at a Town Hall meeting that addresses implementation of a proposed National Volcano Early Warning System (NVEWS). The Town Hall will be held on Thursday evening, 14 Dec., 6:15-7:15 PM, at the Marriott Hotel, Salons 13-15 . The purpose of the Town Hall is to solicit input from the broader scientific community about how to shape NVEWS implementation and enhance scientific opportunities. Recognizing that many potentially dangerous U.S. volcanoes have inadequate or no ground-based monitoring, the U.S Geological Survey (USGS) published ?An Assessment of Volcanic Threat and Monitoring Capabilities in the United States: Framework for a National Volcano Early Warning System -- NVEWS? in 2005 (online at http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2005/1164/ ). Results of the NVEWS assessment are being used to identify needs and establish priorities for long-term improvements to the national volcano-monitoring infrastructure operated by the USGS and affiliated groups. Development of the NVEWS initiative has been guided by CUSVO, the Consortium of U.S. Volcano Observatories (http://cusvo.org/). CUSVO members come from the Federal, academic, and State agencies and groups directly and formally involved in observatory operations: the USGS, University of Washington, University of Alaska, University of Utah, University of Hawaii, Advanced National Seismic Systems, UNAVCO, Alaska Division of Geology and Geophysics, and Yellowstone National Park. NVEWS would serve diverse constituencies, including emergency managers, land managers, the aviation sector, the at-risk public, and the scientific community. We invite scientists who produce or use volcanic data to offer their recommendations regarding coordination of data collection, accessibility of monitoring data for scientific research, new research directions, and creation of an external grants program to fund volcanic-hazard research in support of the NVEWS mission. The Town Hall meeting should provide an excellent forum for expressing your interest and ideas.
