Dear All, you probably know the photo of the "maelstrom of water spiraling down the throat of Capelinhos Volcano during a lull in activity" depicted in the Heiken- Fisher-Hulen book: Volcanoes - Crucibles of Change. A Maori legend still reports in their song tradition a huge "whirl" on the sea when they arrived at the Auckland area. Does anybody know more about this Maori legend or current research on Maori legends and volcanic phenomena. Best wishes J. H.
