Dear colleagues,
I would like to draw you attention on the following sessions scheduled for the EGU 2007:

NH5.01 Pre-eruptive warnings

This session addresses hazard assessment related to the reawakening of volcanoes. In preparing for a volcanic crises an arsenal of data and information need to be considered in order to effectively assess associated hazards for the mitigation of risk. The analysis of all pre-eruptive processes in terms of hazard should imply the definition of when an eruption will occur and of which type it will be. Effective management of information and its flow as well as cross-boundary interaction is of paramount importance in order to link data collection, data analysis and evaluation and their application for preventive measures. For this session we would like to solicit contributions pertaining to the analysis of data, as well as the evaluation and management of knowledge for the preparation for a volcanic crisis (short-term and long-term) based on the experience obtained before and during past eruptions as well as knowledge gained in the preparation for upcoming events. Contributions to the session regarding data analysis may include the quantification of pre-eruptive signals such as potential trigger mechanisms of volcanic crises; e.g.; magmatic, tectonic, slope failure or other external/internal factors. Contributions to the evaluation of knowledge may include the modelling of pre-eruptive processes using data obtained from geological, geochemical, geophysical or structural studies during volcano monitoring. We also invite contributions on volcanic susceptibility, eruption modelling as well as scenario and event-tree planning. These areas play an important role for knowledge management by condensing different scientific information at the interface of science and public for the preparation for a crisis and the mitigation of risks.

NH5.02 Quantification and mitigation of volcanic hazard and risk

Volcanic risk is a growing problem for many cities near volcanoes and for most volcanic islands, especially small island developing states (SIDS). It has been estimated that nowadays more than 500 million people are directly or indirectly threatened by volcanoes. Eruptions can indeed have regional and global impacts which affect economic activity, environmental sustainability, and communications locally, regionally, and worldwide. A quantitative forecasting of hazards is of fundamental priority and reliable models for hazard assessment are extremely important. Progress has been made recently in the quantification of volcanic risk. In particular innovative multi-disciplinary methods for describing the dynamics of volcanic hazards and for quantifying the consequences of eruptions on human activities and settlements, either in deterministic and probabilistic ways or a combination of both, have been proposed. For this session we wish to bring numerical modellers and field volcanologists together to show results and innovative techniques developed during recent years in studying volcanic processes and volcanic hazard assessment. We also want to invite contributions on the integration of hazard, vulnerability and exposure data into formalised risk assessment studies as well as on risk-informed mitigation measures of any type. Studies on new ways and tools to assist responsible Civil Authorities in the decision-making process and in the scientific expression of volcanic risk are also welcome.
