GMPV3 Session on

*Phase changes, magma properties, magmatic and eruptive processes*

GOALS: Magmatic and eruptive processes are tightly linked to the internal evolution of magma raising from the feeding system, hosted in the magma chamber, flowing towards the surface along volcanic conduits or fissures, and dispersing into the atmosphere or along lava flows or pyroclastic flows. Phase changes and magmatic properties deeply affect and largely control such processes. Refilling of magma chambers may cause their global destabilization, enhancing convection and mixing, which together with parallel pressure increase, possibly lead to a volcanic eruption. Phase changes result in significant changes in magmatic properties, ultimately concurring to the dynamics of magma ascent and eruption. The resulting eruption styles and dynamics, and the size of the eruption, reflect the complex interplay between physical and chemical processes and properties. This session invites experimental, theoretical and numerical contributions highlighting in a quantitative way such complex relationships. Contributions devoted to new modelling and parameterizations of single phase and multiphase magma properties and/or phase changes are also welcome.

We are looking forward to welcome you in Vienna.

With kind regards

Cristina De Campos and

Antonella Longo
