Dear All,

The Department of Earth Sciences of the
University Federico II in Naples (Italy), is
pleased to announce that in the framework of the
Internalization of the University System
sponsored by MIUR (Italian Ministry for
University and Research), a free Short Course
will be held in Naples from November 6 to 10,
2006. It will be presented by Prof. Robert Bodnar
of the Department of Geosciences of Virginia Tech
(Blacksburg, Virginia), and it will benefit of
contributions by R. A. Ayuso (U. S. Geol. Survey,
Reston, VA, USA) , H. E. Belkin (U. S. Geol.
Survey, Reston, VA, USA), B. De Vivo (Univ. di
Napoli Federico II, Italy), M.L. Frezzotti (Univ.
di Siena, Italy), and A. Lima (Univ. di Napoli Federico II, Italy).

Participants will receive a Certificate. Albeit
the Short Course is free, participants will have
to provide by themselves for travel and lodging.

Please spread the news and for any inquiry
contact Dr. Luca Fedele (lufedele@xxxxxxxx).

Participation is free, but, those willing to
participate should send a message to Luca Fedele
anyway, since we need to know in advance, the
number of people who will be attending.

Programme:

November 6th, 2006: The Geohydrologic Cycle (R. J. Bodnar: 4 hours)
The whole Earth system can be divided into the
following reservoirs for H2O: atmosphere,
biosphere, oceans, surface water, groundwater,
glaciers and polar ice, continental crust,
oceanic crust, upper mantle, transition zone,
lower mantle and core. The amount of H2O
contained in each of these reservoirs will be
discussed, as well as the fluxes of H2O between
reservoirs and residence times for H2O in the different reservoirs.
De Vivo B. (1 hour): A hydrothermal model for
ground movements (bradyseism) at Campi Flegrei, Italy.

November 7th, 2006: The role of fluids and
structural and tectonic processes (R. J. Bodnar: 2 hours)
Fluids play an important role in the structural
and tectonic processes by reducing the strength
or rocks and minerals. In turn, both large and
small-scale structures control fluid flow in the
Earth?s crust. Several examples of the role of
fluids in crustal deformation will be discussed.
Lima A.(1 hour): Fluid and melt inclusions study
from ejected Mt. Somma-Vesuvius nodules:
Constraints on the evolution of the magmatic system.

November 7th, 2006: Fluids in sedimentary basins (R. J. Bodnar: 2 hours)
As sediments are deposited and compacted during
basin evolution, fluids of varying composition
are generated and expelled from sediments during
diagenesis. The compositions of fluids in
sedimentary basins and origin of basinal brines will be discussed.

November 8th, 2006: Fluids in volcanic systems (R. J. Bodnar: 4 hours)
Over the past several years much progress has
been made in understanding the evolution of
magmatic systems associated with active
volcanoes. Information that is available from
studies of melt and fluid inclusions in this environment will be discussed.
Belkin H.E. (1 hour): Geochemical comparison
between the Campanian ignimbrite and the older ignimbrites.

November 9th, 2006: Fluids in magmatic ?
hydrothermal ore deposits (R. J. Bodnar: 4 hours)
Fluids in magmatic ? hydrothermal systems
transport and deposit metals to generate economic
mineral deposits. Our current understanding of
the role of fluids in the ore forming process will be summarized.
Frezzotti M.L (1 hour): The plumbing system of
active volcanoes as revealed by fluid inclusion geo-barometry and petrology.

November 10th, 2006: Fluid and melt inclusions (R. J. Bodnar: 4 hours)
Techniques, analytical problems and applications
to plutonic and volcanic environments,
Ayuso R.A. (1 hour): Somma-Vesuvius: review of
geochemical and Sr, Nd, Pb and O isotope data.
