Winter Break Field Trips to Patagonia

From: Jim Reynolds <reynoljh@xxxxxxxxxxx>

The Appalachian Center for Environmental Education (ACEE) announces that
it is initiating new international field programs for educators and
students. The inaugural excursions will take place in December and
January when ACEE Associate Director and Associate Professor of Geology
Dr. Jim Reynolds will lead two trips to southern Patagonia in Argentina
and Chile. Jaclyn Cockburn, a doctoral student at Queen’s University,
Kingston, Ontario will be the Associate Leader. A College/K-12 Faculty
trip titled “Winter Break in Patagonia” will take place from December
9 - 23, 2006 . The student trip, titled “New Year’s at the End of the
World", will run from December 26, 2006 to January 10, 2007.
Participants on both trips will camp in the national parks and forests
of the southern Andes and Tierra del Fuego.

The mission of ACEE <http://www.brevard.edu/pfi/acee.htm> is to provide
field and classroom experience in all aspects of environmental
education. By offering this trip to teaching faculty, it is hoped that
the experience gained from this journey will inspire some of the
participants to return to Patagonia as trip leaders with their students.

The trips are based on a 2004 Geological Society of America excursion
that was also led by Jim Reynolds. They will visit the wild, nearly
uninhabited reaches of southernmost South America. For some it may be
the first international experience as a geologist. Patagonia will
provide a magnificent gateway to the geology of the world.
Patagonia is a beautiful and fascinating part of the planet. Covering
southern Argentina and Chile, spectacular scenery awaits around every
turn. Glaciers, pampas, mountains, and waterfalls are only part of the
variety Patagonia has to offer. Birds and wildlife abound. Hundreds of
guanacos (a wild llama species) and rheas (the South American ostrich
species) as well as numerous smaller animals and birds roam the broad
pampas of the region.
