*********************************** Validation of OMI SO2 measurements *********************************** From: Simon Carn <scarn@xxxxxxxx> We are seeking cooperation in the validation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) measurements made by the new Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on NASA's EOS/Aura satellite. OMI offers a higher level of spatial and spectral resolution than previous space-based UV instruments such as TOMS, and is thus observing smaller eruption clouds at a much higher frequency, in addition to passive degassing. The SO2 measured in these clouds, as they are transported from the source, can be tracked for longer than was previously possible due to OMI's lower detection limit. Hence there will be more opportunities for users of ground- based and airborne instruments (e.g. COSPEC, mini-spectrometers, Brewers, etc.) to measure SO2 in drifting clouds as they pass overhead and are simultaneously measured and tracked with the OMI sensor. We would like to establish an inventory of researchers who wish to be notified in advance of such events so that observations can be made. If interested, please send me a quick email (scarn@xxxxxxxx) with your type(s) of instrument(s) and (if known) the approximate latitude and longitude of its(their) location. Many thanks in advance for your consideration.
