From: Ed Llewellin <ed@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

39-MONTH POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER POSITION AVAILABLE:

Department of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol, UK.

"RHEOLOGY OF CRYSTAL BEARING MAGMAS"

Magma rheology exerts a fundamental control on volcanic eruptive style and
crystal-rich magmas are often associated with hazardous dome-forming
eruptions, such as that of Montserrat, West Indies. This 39-month project
will combine state-of-the-art laboratory experiments with numerical
modelling to characterize the rheology of crystal-bearing magma and
investigate its role in controlling the explosivity of volcanic eruptions.

The project is funded by a research grant from the UK's Natural Environment
Research Council (NERC) and is a collaboration between Dr H M Mader (Earth
Sciences, Bristol) and Dr E W Llewellin (BP Institute, Cambridge). The
research follows on from previous work by the PIs on the rheology of bubble
suspensions (Llewellin et al, 2002a, 2002b). The Postdoctoral Researcher
will be based in the Department of Earth Sciences at Bristol. Contact with
EWL will be maintained via a series of exchange visits. The successful
candidate will have a numerate background with a PhD in Earth Sciences or a
Physical Science. Experience of laboratory flow experimentation and
numerical flow modelling is advantageous.
