Geodetic IT Assistant - ID# 26251. Center for the Study of Active 
Volcanoes.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Center for 
the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV), located at the United States 
Geological Survey (USGS), Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) in the Hawaii 
Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent 
upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and 
availability of funds. Minimum Monthly Salary: $1,946.00. 

Duties: Participates in the collection of deformation monitoring data and 
the maintenance and installation of continuously recording instruments. 
Assists in the administration of the deformation computer network, 
including keeping Linux OS, and various software packages (e.g. apache, 
MySql) up to date and in compliance with security regulations. Archive 
deformation data and back up MySql databases and all critical software and 
files on a regular schedule. Develops java programs that automatically 
ingest various observatory data sets into MySql database. Develops 
routines for plotting new datasets within existing java/JSP software that 
allows interactive visualization of observatory data through a web-based 
interface (VALVE). Installs and troubleshoots new versions of VALVE and 
associated web server software. Refines and/or establishes MySql database 
structures. Refines and/or develops web-based interfaces for databases of 
equipment inventories and maintenance records, monitoring station location 
and access information, and data holdings. Assists in the development of 
data downloading and analysis software. 

Minimum Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited 
four (4) year college or university in Computer or Physical Sciences 
(Associate's Degree from an accredited community college and one (1) year 
of work experience in computer programming will substitute for a 
Bachelor's Degree). Abil/Know/Skills: Strong knowledge of Linux, and of 
Java or C, and of languages used in web-based programming (e.g. PHP or 
JSP). Must possess a valid driver's license. Physical/Medical Demands: 
Must be able to hike over uneven terrain with a thirty (30) pound load and 
tolerate the Occupational Safety and Health Administration 
(OSHA)-permitted levels of sulfur dioxide exposure. 

Desirable Qualifications: Knowledge of MySql, Matlab. Experience 
collecting, analyzing, and archiving data. Experience in web server 
administration. Experience with or good understanding of electronics. 
Experience or knowledge of WiFi applications. Experience with physical 
exertion at high altitude (13,000 feet).
