****************************************************************** PhD position in the Environment Department, University of York, UK ****************************************************************** From: Pierre Delmelle <pd512@xxxxxxxxxx> Gas-Ash Interactions in Volcanic Plumes Applications are invited from UK resident students with, or expecting to gain, a first class or 2.1 BSc in Chemistry, Environmental science or Earth science subject for a 3 year NERC Quota Studentship, commencing on 1st October 2006. Volcanic eruptions can inject large amounts of sulphur and halogen gases and particles into the atmosphere. These plumes are highly heterogeneous environments in which gases, liquids and solids coexist and interact under various physico-chemical conditions. Knowledge of the surface reactivity of fine silicate ash is central to the understanding of the processes which may alter the nature and amount of the gases present in the plume, and thus to the evaluation of the atmospheric, environmental and health impacts of volcanic eruptions. For example, silicate ash particles are known to be good scavengers of volcanic sulphur and halogens, but the type, rate and extent of the reactions involved remain largely undescribed. At high altitudes these particles also can promote ice formation, thereby providing new surface characteristics for diverse heterogeneous chemical pathways. This project will deploy a combination of state-of-the-art surface techniques to probe the reactivity of volcanic ash. Accordingly, a substantial part of the research will be devoted to laboratory-based experiments and analyses. The project should appeal students who have an interest in interdisciplinary research on atmospheric/environmental issues. The student will receive training in surface chemistry, atmospheric and environmental sciences and volcanology. This project will be under the supervision of Dr. P. Delmelle. It will run in close collaboration with Dr. A. Lee and Dr. K. Wilson from the Department of Chemistry. Informal applications should be made to P. Delmelle (pd512@xxxxxxxxxx), to whom applications consisting of full curriculum vitae including the names and addressed of two academic referees should be sent by deadline of 28th April 2006.
