********************************************************* 2006 Goldschmidt Conference Melbourne, Australia: 27th Aug - 1st Sept 2006 Session Announcement: Plumes and Large Igneous Provinces ********************************************************* From: David Peate <david-peate@xxxxxxxxx> Dear colleagues: I would like to invite you to contribute to a session on "Plumes and Large Igneous Provinces" to be held during the 2006 Goldschmidt Conference in Melbourne, Australia: 27th Aug - 1st Sept 2006. Session convenors are David Peate (Iowa) & Andrew Kerr (Cardiff). The generation of Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Ocean Island Basalts (OIB) are often linked to mantle plumes. For this symposium, we solicit contributions that apply a diversity of geochemical methods to questions concerning the nature and origin of LIPs and OIB. Topics might include: temperature and volatile estimates of mantle sources; improved geochronology of hotspot tracks and the timing and duration of LIPs; environmental impact of LIPs; source heterogeneity and melting processes; crustal-level differentiation and assimilation processes. The mantle plume paradigm is being increasingly questioned, and so we are particularly interested in contributions that address the validity of the mantle plume model in the generation of LIPs and OIB from a geochemical viewpoint. Keynote speaker: Ian Campbell. Confirmed invited speakers: Dominique Weis, Keith Putirka, Kaj Hoernle. The meeting is being held in Melbourne, Australia, from 27th August -1st September 2006. Details of the conference can be found at www.goldschmidt2006.org where abstract format/submission/registration instructions can also be found. Note that abstract submission deadline is April 13th, 2006. David W.
