IV Pico Island International Volcanological Meeting 

OVERVIEW
The Azores archipelago is a natural laboratory for studies on the field of 
volcanology (such a multidisciplinary science), what makes the Azores 
region a special place for many studies, researchers and scientists. 
In this context, the Pico Island International Volcanological Meeting 
(JIVIP) aim to contribute for the promotion and the spreading of knowledge 
in the domain of Volcanology about the Island of Pico, the Azores and, in 
general, the World. 
The main goals of the IV edition of the JIVIP Meeting are: (1) to 
constitute a meeting among specialists on the field of volcanology (2) to 
contribute for a better knowledge on the geology and volcanology of the 
archipelagos of the 'Macaronesia' - Azores, Madeira, Canaries and Cape 
Verde and (3) to improve the dialogue between the researchers and the 
local community. For the achievement of these goals, JIVIP Meeting 
includes: (1) scientific sessions, for presentation of new research works; 
(2) a Course, with both theoretical and practical classes; and (3) public 
sessions, devoted to the volcanism and its interactions with the society. 
In this meeting there will be invited scientists from countries such as 
Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, United States of America and Japan, besides 
Portugal Mainland. It is expected the participation of authorities and 
technicians of the national, regional and local administrations.

VENUE AND DATES
The fourth edition of the JIVIP Meeting will take place at Lajes do Pico 
village, on the SE coast of Pico Island (Azores), on May 2nd and 3rd, 
2006. 
The course 'Geotectonics and Volcanism of the Macaronesia' will take place 
between May 4th and 6th.
