vote on features or something else with low barrier of entry work?

I'm starting to reckon that a richer-functionality but potentially less stable fork may be the way forward.  Then see which one gets the users over the next decade!  It's reasonable that a mostly RedHat team prefer to maintain a small, reliable product and reject suggestions for a larger product; it's equally reasonable for a group of people outside of RedHat to decide to maintain something different.
