FYI I have been unsuccessful in getting a pure development environment working
in order to test the proper python imports.  Thanks for keeping the patch alive.
I was motivated in getting a wider range of characters used in username and
password such as the '@' character.  I don't have much experience with needing
utf-8 or not.
