Creating a file that can be attached as a writable DVD image

I have Windows 10 in a VM, and I want to create a rescue image for it. According to some Googling around, it should be possible to use a writable DVD for this purpose.

Would this be as basic as creating a file of the appropriate size, and connecting it to the "IDE CDROM 1" device? I didn't find anything useful in qemu-img's manual page…
