It is not really what you are looking for, but I implemented the picture in picture addon for yaVDR with this approach: http://www.yavdr.org/blog/blog-post/2010/12/01/announcing-yavdr-addon-pip-picture-in-picture/ It is unbelievable simple and could give you an idea what the system load could be.
